iPhone vs iPod Touch

Okay then, so we have had the Apple iPhone 5 event and I am more confused than ever. Well, maybe not that confused because the combination of features and prices are starting to firm up my choice of next iOS device. With the fact that Apple announced the new versions of the iPod Touch at the same event, I could be moving more towards buying that device instead of an iPhone.

The story so far with my iPhone

At the beginning of the summer I bought an iPhone 4. This is because I needed to replace the iPhone 3 which was getting rather long in the tooth. My main use for it was to play podcasts and I needed that to keep me sane during quiet periods at work. I bought the iPhone 4 for €499 and I must say that I have been very happy with the device. With the fact that I use dictation so much, I do find that I miss the ability to dictate in the same way as I do with the iPad. Due to my desire to have an iOS device that I can dictate to and control with my voice using Siri, I would need to get the iPhone 4S. At least I have the new iPad Siri, I can still use Siri with iOS 6.

iPhone vs iPod Touch – decisions decisions

I was quite pleased to see that the iPhone 4 has come down in price substantially, instead of the €499 that I paid recently, it is now available for €389. I can’t complain about the difference in price because I needed to buy the phone when I needed it. What I might complain about is, that the iPhone 4S has not come down in price a similar amount. If the 4S had come down enough, then I would be saving cash towards buying one of these iPhones. This is because, if it comes to a decision between having the iPhone 4S or the iPod touch fifth-generation, then there is no contest. The extra connectivity available within the iPhone over the iPod Touch is more useful to me than is the larger screen of the iPod Touch.

Costs and tech comparisons – iPhone vs iPod Touch

So now that I can rule out the iPhone 4S from my buying decision, the next comparison to make it is between the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch. I should say that the reason I need to get another device is because I have promised the iPhone 4 that I have been using during the summer, to pass it on to my wife. I needed the use of it while I was working during the summertime and now she’s back at work and will make better use of it than I will. I have my iPad three available to me here while I am working from home with all of my Wi-Fi connectivity. I actually have very little use for the phone capabilities of the iPhone.

I can’t say that I am particularly looking forward to the idea of using her nearly smart phone rather than the iPhone, but we do have an older iPod in the house that I can use to listen to the podcasts. So I will have to be carrying around a separate phone and an iPod. There is one other reason why I might be better to have an iPhone rather than an iPod Touch, it is for the GPS facilities. Yesterday I went on a bicycle ride of 20 km and I used to the application called Trails. This is a super application which records your journey while you are walking, cycling or with whatever other transport. For this you do need to have the mobile phone connectivity for the data for the maps. Of course having a GPS receiver in the phone is also necessary. My friend who has an iPod Touch is able to get around this to a certain extent by using a Bluetooth GPS receiver connected to his iOS device. Yet another thing to have to carry around.

IPhone 5 Siri

Given my circumstances, which would you buy? An iPhone 4 or one of the new fifth-generation iPad touch’s.

There are plus points to having the iPod Touch such as the faster processor, the better screen, 32 GB of storage rather than only 8 GB and the ability to dictate to it using Siri. It would be nice if I could afford the iPhone5 Siri.

The plus points for the iPhone 4 would be the GPS, the mobile connectivity and to be honest I am having difficulty in coming up with any other reasons. Is it worth to buy this device even though it only costs €70 more than the new iPod Touch.

As I am writing this article the new iPod Touch is becoming more desirable to me. With regards the connectivity, for the most part I am within range of Wi-Fi. For the times when I am out of range, I do have the MiFi product which does at least give me data. It will not turn the iPod Touch into a phone for me, so I will need to take something with me to take phone calls.

One more thing to take into consideration

There are very strong rumours that there will be a new iPad Mini, possibly available in October. On account of the fact that the new iPod Touch is not available until October either, perhaps I would be better to wait and see what happens. It could well be that there will be good reasons to buy such a device which at present is still just a mythical. It is a little hard to see how the iPad Mini will fit into the price ranges that Apple have presented us with. It will probably have to be more than the €319 32 GB model of the iPod Touch. This will be more than the predicted pricing from the Apple pundits, so maybe there will be capability differences that will allow Apple to price it lower. If that happens, then I could still have a conundrum on my hands with regards to deciding which device to get, based upon the relationship between the capabilities and the price. Obviously, like most people I am looking for the best bang for the buck. Look out for a new iPod review. When does the new iPod Touch come out? October 2012. Along with the new iPod Touch release there are new iPod Nanos which have changed shape again. Good to see Apple new iPods even if it has led to my confusion with the iPhone vs iPod Touch debate for me.

iPad Mini 2012 – It’s coming

iPad Mini 2012 – It’s coming

At the moment, it is all still rumours regarding the iPad mini release date. If you work on the basis of there is no smoke without fire, there is a good chance that there will be an iPad Mini 2012. It seems that the sales of other 7 inch tablets has given proof to the fact that there is a market for such a device. Personally, I think that the iPod Touch is in serious need of an update and an iPad mini could be that device. It might not be too long before we see an iPad Mini release. Of course we don’t yet know the iPad Mini release date. Apple are very good at keeping secret the final word on new products, despite all of the attempts by the rumour mongers at industrial espionage.

Guessing the iPad mini 2012 specifications

At the time of writing this article, it is rather a waste of time and effort in trying to guess the iPad Mini specs. But that doesn’t stop the fans of the Mac and iOS, from saying what they would like to see as the specifications for a smaller iPad. There will be some Apple fans that would like to see a 16 x 9 widescreen device, but I suspect that will be unlikely. If there was a change in the video ratio then that would entail software to be written specifically for such a device.

free applications

I expect the new iPad Mini to have pretty much the same capabilities that the present new iPad already has. The smaller form factor will be the only differentiator, probably, because I’m only guessing. There is talk that the iPad Mini 2012 will surface sometime during October. Apple commentators in the know, seem to think that there will not be an announcement about the iPad Mini 2012 at the iPhone 5 announcement. This is because to do so would steal the thunder from the iPhone 5 arrival. Besides, Apple fans can only take so much excitement in one day.

Apple iPad Mini release date

I have absolutely no idea whatsoever when this new device might be unveiled to the public. If you have any ideas or inside knowledge, why not leave a comment below in the comment section of this article. I would love to hear your views on when you think there will be the announcement from Apple regarding the smaller iPad. Do you think it will actually be called the iPad Mini? It could quite legitimately be called the iPad Maxi, what do you think of that then?

iPad Mini Rumors

As I have already commented upon in a YouTube video on the Wizardgold video channel, I do not like to deal in rumours. I would much rather wait until there is an actual announcement from our favourite fruit flavoured computer manufacturer in Cupertino. There will always be rumours about the next products coming out of Apple. Often these rumours will start just a couple of hours after the release of the latest version of that product. Such is the way of the Apple universe.

iPad Mini SIM

There has been talk about the size of the Apple iPad SIM coming in a nano size. This is because Apple were in the driving seat with regards the creation of a smaller SIM. This being a Nano SIM in comparison to the size of the SIM card, that is presently in the iPhone 4 and 4S. With the mobile devices getting smaller and smaller, even gaining a small amount of space by using a smaller iPad Mini SIM could make a design difference. It would be great to do away with the need for a Sim altogether, as that would free up even more space. One would think that it would be possible to have a software-based SIM card these days.

Keep watching the Apple iPad Mini news

In the meantime we will have to make do with what we have already, with our amazing iPad. I am finding that I carry my iPad with me more and more. I’m always downloading new software and finding more uses for what is becoming my favourite computer. There are some tasks that I prefer to sit in my office chair and be in front of my iMac, but there are some big things that I can now do with my iPad. I am finding loads of educational uses for the iPad, both on the teacher side and the student side.

Pomodoro app alternative – 30/30

The whole idea behind this application is that you are giving yourself a work cycle which is more conducive to productivity. Rather than having a task which has an undefined period of time to be completed, you give yourself work sessions of 30 min. At the end of the period of work you have a break, or move yourself to a different task. What this does is to help you to eliminate distractions and there are plenty of those when you are using a computer. For the time that you are working, at the back of your mind you know that it is a manageable amount of time and it is easier for you to focus on what you’re doing. The time that you spend having a break or doing something completely different gives your brain time to recharge. It is like when you are in a fancy restaurant and in between main courses you might get a sorbet to clear the palate. When you start the next main course your taste buds are refreshed and you can properly appreciate the food. 30/30 organises your work periods so that you know that you are getting a reward of a nice break at the end of your focused work session.

30/30 does a lot more than the Pomodoro app

With the 30/30 application you can set up a whole list of tasks and have breaks in between them. You get to see how long the whole job is going to take and at what time you can expect to be finished. So with this Pomodoro app alternative you can take it further than just it being a simple task timer. In the video I show how I work when creating an article. I break this down into a period of dictating, followed by 10 min of editing, followed by time using Marsedit, which is then finished off by working on the article within WordPress. I could insert five or ten minute breaks between each of these tasks, but I don’t feel that I need them. Certainly I would add another task to the end of this which would be more like taking a break from the work. That could be 30 minutes on the sofa reading a book – more than likely. Or it could be 30 min in the garden getting one of the garden jobs done – less likely.

Pomodoro app alternative

Other uses for 30/30 the task timer

Education: when working with a group of students in a classroom, teachers will tend to have a plan for the class period. This could be 10 min of time explaining things followed by fifteen minutes of activity. Then there could be a twenty minute session where individual students show what they have done. Finishing off with a summing up of the work done within the classroom lesson for five minutes, and then five minutes to set the homework. The 30/30 iOS timer is just perfect for using with a lesson plan. It is flexible enough that if more time is needed with one of the tasks, you can easily add 5 min. You can also remove 5 min if necessary too. With some dragging and dropping you can arrange and rearrange tasks in this tasktimer. Without a doubt I can certainly see myself using this as a class timer when I’m teaching English as a foreign language.

30/30 a simple and attractive interface

I really like the interface that you get with this application. It fully uses the iPad touch interface and you don’t get the old fashioned settings with checkboxes and so on. You touch parts of the simple, but elegant graphics of the task timer to organise your tasks and timings. Same with the settings area, where it’s all very visual and 1 million light years away from the way things were done in crappy Windows applications of the past. It is very easy to turn on or off the notifications and adjust the settings for sound.

30/30 works with iCloud and will synchronise your task lists between your IOS devices. I have this application on both my iPhone and also the iPad I have seen the synchronisation in operation. I could see that it could also be quite handy if the developers could also make 30/30 as a Mac application.

task timer

30/30 Gestures

The application works with gestures, such as a slide to the left of one of the tasks for it to be moved to the bottom of the list. A tap with two fingers on a task will move it to the top. Slide the task to the right and it will be deleted. Put two fingers on the screen and move them apart to create a new task. You then get options to set the amount of time, the label for the task and even the icon that you want to use. The application is a free application and you can show your love with in app purchases of extra icons. Better than the Pomodoro app.

The dial at the top gives you a visual representation of the time as it is passing. You tap on the dial to start or pause the timer or touch and hold to make the timer stop completely. The main thing to remember here is that if you want to move a task to the bottom you have to slide to the left. If you slide the wrong way then that task will be deleted. This is an excellent alternative to the Pomodoro app, 30/30 is well-designed, colourful and a joy to use as a task timer. Definitely you will find it to be a good addition to your arsenal of iPad productivity applications.

Using my iPad to edit video and other stuff

I am so pleased to have the iPad 3 to work with now with its two cameras. It means that I can use iPhoto and do some of those iPhoto Journals and also use other iPad photo applications. Not only that but I can shoot video on the iPad. I had a go at that today and it sort of worked. When I had recorded into the iMovie app the video was upside down in the app. I suppose the trick is to set the app the right way up as I. The same as it will be when I set it down to make the recording. What happened today was that I flipped the iPad over after I had tapped on the button the make iMovie record.

Shooting video with the iPad three

The other thing I noticed after shooting the video on the iPad was that the sound quality was not that good. I could have used my iRig microphone but I didn’t have it with me. It should have been decent enough because I was in the car doing this.

Still trying to get my head around ThinkBook

I like the application but I have found some thing s that are not so good. I would like the app to let me turn larger lumps of text into separate notes that can be indented. I want a way to change a question type note to a norma, note easily. I would like better ways to import text too. Overall I think the interface and the way it works needs a bit of a sorting out. Still believe that it is useful for outlining and worth the $1.99 but it could be better. Why is it possible to have book inside pages?? That metaphor just doesn’t work!

Magical Pad for outlining

MagicalPad is another app that does a pile of thing and could just fit in with what you want to do. It will do mind mapping, although not as good as you get with iThoughts HD it also will do outlining and work for note taking. It is very free form in the way it works and you can combine all these things on one page. That makes it quite useful, and unique. Again with this one it seems that it is not so easy to split chunks of text into smaller sectioned so that it can be indented and outdented. The import functions are very limited with MagicalPad too. Seems that it is just the way things go with iPad apps. We just have to get used to the idea that we need to start working on a project in one application and then maybe work with a couple of other apps along the way to the finished product.

You can read more about ThinkBook on the NoStylus web site as well as see the video in which I demonstrate how it works. I even have a second video in the works to show how to import templates from the ThinkBook website. Working how to do that was a bit of a marathon also.

IPad to edit video and other things

I really did touch the screen of my iMac the other day and expected a window to move. I said to myself “You silly arse.” had a good laugh at my stupidity and that was that. I did wonder late though if one day we will see desktop computers fro Apple that have touch screens included.

Loving the dictation on the iPad and also in Mountain Lion

The only thing. I wonder about is the need to work in a quiet environment to use it properly. If you have music playing in the background or maybe the telly is loudly filling the room with drama, documentaries or other speech. Will the dictation work well enough? I know that I sometimes when I am working want to use the dictation, but can’t because of the extraneous noises.

iPad Safari settings for buying Lingerie in secret

If you like to go shopping for ladies lingerie using your iPad and Safari and you would like to keep it secret then you should know about how to enable private browsing. With private browsing you will see a black bar at the top of the application and none of the sites that you visit will be logged. You can check out those sites that you don’t want your fellow shared iPad user to see. When you have finished looking at your ladies underwear or whatever it is that you like to look at you can go back to the normal mode of Safari browsing.

The list of websites in the Safari history blabbed on you

If you forgot to set your private browsing when you’re off buying that ladies underwear, then there will be a list of sites in the history. If you’re using the iPad as a shared computer with your significant other, then you may want to clear out the history. With a proper relationship you shouldn’t really have secrets from your significant other, but they could have been an occasion where you are buying a present. It would be a shame to let the cat out of the bag so that the present would not be a surprise when the present giving day arrived.

Safety, privacy and security on the iPad

There are going to be perfectly valid reasons why you want to keep things completely quiet and to yourself. You can set up Safari so that you have private browsing. If you forget the private browsing facility that is available to you then you can also clear out the history, after the fact. So whether you like to dress up at the weekend, or you are buying presents for a loved one, rest assured that the iPad will keep your secret. This

How to select all text in your iPad text apps

One of the things that you’re bound to do at some point in time using your iPad, is to edit some text. Whether you are using the on-screen keyboard, an external Bluetooth keyboard or maybe you are dictating, you will want to make some changes. To make these changes you will need to select the text, one or two words or a whole paragraph, to do what you have to do. You could take a selection of text and easily delete it using the backspace key. If you’re working in something that is more than just a straightforward text application, such as the Apple Pages app, then you might want to apply some formatting.

text apps

Controlling your text app with your fingers

In your text application such as Nebulous Notes, Textastic, SimpleNote, Blogsy or my present favourite, which is Byword, you can double tap on a word to select it. The trick is to hold your finger on the screen on the second tap and move it to extend the selection. With this iPad tip or trick, you can quickly select the text in your document.

Selecting paragraphs in your text application on the iPad

In my tests I have found that there are some applications in which the trick of tapping three times to select the paragraph works fine and then with others it doesn’t. In Byword on the iPad you have to get the triple tap just right and sometimes it feels like it needs to have four taps to select the paragraph. In Apple Pages application the triple tap to select, works perfectly. While I was testing this in the application Textastic this selection trick does not work at all. That is not too big of a problem though, because there are other selection tools within that application.

How to select all text within the document

If you tap and hold then let go, you will see a pop-up with the choices of Select, Select
All and Paste. The paste option might not be there if you have nothing on your clipboard. So with this context sensitive menu that has popped up, you can easily select all of the text within your document.

With all of these amazing iPad tips and tricks for selecting text you have sufficient tools to be able to control your iPad text apps. You will be able to select text and then either delete it or format it in the iPad text application. These iPad text selection tricks are available across the board whether it be a free text app or one that you have paid for. You now know how to select all text.

Using Blogsy

Type in Blogsy

This is a test of the application called Blogsy which I’m going to do a review of and the quick run through of what the application is capable of. It is quite handy to have an application on your iPad that will let you do blog postings to platforms. I like to use WordPress but other people might like to use Posterous, Tumblr, Blogger or Joomla. You can even make a blog post to Squarespace.

It is easy to add text to your documents and you can also add photos and videos. The application does take a little bit of getting used to, in terms of how to get your pictures into the document. After you have done it once or twice you will find it very very easy. As the actress said to the Bishop….

You have the possibility of making the text bold, italics or underlined and you can set the formatting to be left justified or one of the other justifications of the text. you can set a paragraph to be header one, header two or header three, or whatever you want and you can even include a block quote. There doesn’t seem to be a way to have the text flow around an image, unless you go in and edit the HTML in the code side of the post.

To get started you need to set up the access to the blog and you can if you do that by adding a blog to the Blogsy application.

My New iPad WiFi model – iPad 3 for Educational use

Finally got the new iPad – My iPad 3 first impressions

Being a fan of Apple products, it is only natural that I wanted to get the new iPad soon as it became available – on the iPad 3 launch date. Unfortunately, I had to wait until the money became available to get the new Apple iPad 3. I suppose the question to be answered is, why did I need a new iPad wifi 16GB, when I already had the iPad 1? Aside from the obvious reasons of wanting to have the latest, newest and shiniest, the main reason for wanting the new iPad was the ability to send the iPad screen to my Mac via Wi-Fi. The iPad 3 resolution is pretty amazing really. I already have a growing catalogue of videos on my Wizardgold/Mac20Q YouTube channel that are how-to videos showing how to work with Mac software. Naturally I want to do iPad videos also and my attempts to do them with the over shoulder camerawork, I don’t feel have been terribly successful. With the new iPad 3 I can use the application Reflection on my Mac and airplay the video from the iPad to it. When I have the video available on my iMac and I can then record it using the application ScreenFlow.

My first impressions of the new iPad wifi model

Maybe I have become used to the extra speed with the faster processor in the new iPad and the lovely retina screen, but I’m not experiencing a huge wow factor. Don’t get me wrong, I am loving the new iPad wifi only and probably all I need is to have 10 min again with the iPad 1, so that I really get the point.

With the previous iPad, I had the Apple cover for it and found it to be very useful. I haven’t bought an iPad case or a cover for this model yet. I don’t particularly like the colours of the Smart Cover and I think they seem quite expensive. The Apple smart cover for the iPad looks like it could be quite useful for when you need to stand the iPad up to use it. That can be either when you have it in landscape mode or in portrait mode. I think perhaps the Smart Cover for the iPad is less useful in terms of protecting the iPad from wear and tear. There is another version of the smart cover that does have protection for the back of the iPad and I may go into an Apple Store to have a closer look. I will check out the iPad designer cases too.

Getting up and running with the new iPad from Apple

All I did was to plug it into my iMac and tell it to restore from a backup that came from the previous iPad. For the most part, this worked very well although adjustments were required, on account of this new iPad has only 16 GB of storage space. The previous model I had, had 32 GB available and so I have had to do some judicious pruning of applications and content. While I was trying to get the content and the data sorted out, I felt it was a bit of a moving target. In the end the best way to move forward was to search for the applications with the largest footprint, to see which ones I could remove and save most space. There was some, like Garageband and iPhoto that I was not going to take off whatever happened. It was probably more due to my impatience to get using the iPad and maybe I could have set it up as a new iPad rather than going with the backup from the previous. On the other hand though, at least the way that I did it most of the settings for applications were preserved. I expect that I may have saved myself some hassle by going with the backup option. Even so, with some applications such as Tweetbot, for example, I did have to reauthorise the application to use my Twitter accounts.

Planned educational use of the iPad

As I live and work in Spain and have to try and survive financially on work that only becomes available during the summer holiday period, I have decided to look at teaching English as a foreign language. I have already worked teaching English in a Spanish school recently and I quite enjoyed it. The plan now is to do the TEFL course and look for private customers and possibly set up a small classroom to teach English. I do have a space where I could situate the classroom and generally it could be quite a useful business. The thing is, is that there are English-language schools available already in the area and I think that to have a unique selling proposition of having iPads for students to use in the class, could set me apart from the crowd.

iPads in the classroom

I have been reading a number of blogs with stories of how teachers are using the iPad in the classroom and it looks very interesting indeed. There are a number of applications available that are specific to learning English as a foreign language and there are also plenty of apps which are just plain useful for teachers. While I was teaching in the local school, I made use of the iPad Bento application and the iPad Evernote app extensively. It was also easy to show videos and to play audio clips in the classroom directly from the iPad. This would be more difficult with a large class of students but there is a way to get around this. iStudiez Pro iPad app is handy tool for teachers to use.

IMG 0373

The Apple TV and the iPad

What some teachers have done, is to use an iPad in conjunction with an Apple TV connected to a television. With this configuration of technology the teacher can walk around freely within the classroom and have whatever is on the iPad sent over the air to the Apple TV. The teacher can use this to show a specific application for learning English or could use a whiteboard type of application. With these whiteboard apps you can use them to show images, write or draw on and even to show animations. The days could be numbered for those big smart boards that are in most classrooms in the UK.

The effects of using the iPad in the classroom

Being able to walk around freely in the classroom is excellent for classroom management. The teacher not being tied to the front of the class and having to turn their back on the monkeys, I mean students, helps with the control of the class. You would be able to stand at the back of the class, behind those that think that they can sit at the back and hide or mess around. It is quite possible that the students generally will be more engaged with the subject matter, due to the use of new and exciting technology. It would probably be likely that there would be fewer occurrences of bored pupils that can’t be bothered. In any case, the disruptive pupil now has nowhere to hide.

Making the best use of the available technology in education

The more that a teacher can use all of the available senses to engage the students, the better. There will be the need to continue using teaching techniques that don’t require using the iPad. I don’t believe in throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It is true to say though, that the new technology extends and expands the options available. Images, video and sound can be used along with the interactive nature of using a computer that you can touch, to make things happen. With this you can integrate the kinetic element of learning where the students are learning by doing. I love the possibilities of teaching with the iPad as a tool.

Using technology to flip the class

There is even a school of thought at the moment, that would have the use of the class flipping to change the way the education operates, even more. There are few different ways of doing this and one of them could be the teacher presenting the information in a video. The student watches this video to get the explanation and the basic content outside of the class. That would be the homework. Then in the flipped classroom, the teacher can have a more interactive approach with activities based upon the previously viewed content. I like this idea and I would be keen to give it a try. The process and mechanics of flipping a class would require a number of articles to fully explore and explain, so I won’t go into full details in this one.

ipad for educational use

Enjoying using the iPad 3

With explaining some of the reasons for my wanting to get the new iPad, I digressed or went off on bit of a tangent. Even with the great iPad 3 specifications, it is still about the user experience. I have to say that I am very pleased with my new purchase and you should look out for some how-to videos on the Mac20Q YouTube channel. If you have any comments or questions with regards how the iPad 3 tablet could be used in the classroom, please feel free to leave a comment below or use the contact form. I am looking forward to hearing from you, especially if you have any positive thoughts concerning the iPad for education. I do wish I could have afforded an iPad with 3G / 4G, but the cash would only stretch to the new iPad wifi version.

How to record your screen to make iPad app tutorials

Recording audio and video on the iPad

For some time now I have been looking at finding a solution to recording the audio and video on the iPad. Finally a fairly good and inexpensive solution has appeared. The way to record your iPad video is to use an application called Display Rec. Up until now there were only more expensive possibilities that is required buying the latest iPad or also the latest video breakout hardware. Now you have an app available in the iTunes App Store that does a reasonable job of capturing video from your iPad.

A test recording of video from the iPad

How to record your screen

My first set of tests of the application Display Rec on the iPad looks very promising indeed. I have been using it with the iPad 1 and the only problem would be, if you want to record your screen, is the need for an iPad with a little more horsepower. I feel sure that to do an iPad screen recording it will work a whole lot better with a later model iPad. At least now it is possible to do some sort of iPad screencast with a cheap screencast recorder for iPad.

How to record your screen of your iPad

Record your screen

If you want to learn how to record your screen it is no longer necessary to break out a huge wad of cash. Head on down to the iTunes App Store and grab a copy of Display Rec. With this application you can make recordings of the video from your iPad, to an iPod video recording to use in screencast. The methods that were used in the past meant that you either have to jailbreak your iPad, or use software that would push the video out to another Apple computer over Wi-Fi. It may also have been possible to do an iPad screen recording by using a fairly expensive breakout box device. I know of two applications that allow you to record iPad screen video and one of them is called Reflection. When you can see the video mirror of what is happening on your iPad on your Macintosh computer, you can record it using your favourite screen capture application. The one that I prefer to users called ScreenFlow.

You can set the quality of the recorded video and also the size of the video in the settings in the Display recorder app. If you need to thou can put in a Max Duration, which might be useful if you have limited space on your device. I have also recorded from the iPhone 4 with this app.

How to record your screen using Display Rec. All you need to do is to start the application on your iPad and then open up the application you wish to record. I demonstrated this in a video about a Byword for iPad and the resulting video was very usable indeed. I was able to get the video onto my Mac via iTunes and although I could use an application like Final Cut Pro X, for quick cutting and editing are used ScreenFlow. When I had finished editing in ScreenFlow, I exported out and did the top and tail of the video in Final Cut.

Display Rec iPad screen recorder pros and cons

The advantages of using Display Rec is that it is a very cheap application to buy and the resulting video is easily good enough to make a watchable screencast. There are not many disadvantages other than you may run into problems if you want to record an application that is for recording audio. I did try to record a video using this iPad screen recorder, Display Rec, of the application that works with the iRig microphone. It seemed that it was doing the recording but when I have finished it was unable to put together anything that I could use. It did look like a video file had been created and I tried to open it in a number of video manipulation applications on the Mac. Each time I tried it seemed that I had just got a video file that was corrupted and useless. During one of my tests I wanted to record the application Tweetbot for iOS and on my iPod 1, I found that the application ran very slowly. The Tweetbot application also crashed and stopped working during this test. If I were using the third-generation iPad I may not run into this problem. I used to use Twittelator Pro before I switched to Tweetbot for iOS and there is now a Tweetbot for Mac.

How to create an iPad video recording

Ipad screen recorder

You now know how to record your screen on the iPad and it is possible to edit this in iMovie. iMovie which is made for the nonprofessional type of user, but gives very professional results. The thing to do is to connect a decent microphone to the iPad rather than use the inbuilt microphone. This will give you a much better sounding voice over track. If you don’t have a good microphone to connect to the iPad, then use the internal microphone and replace the soundtrack when editing on your Apple Mac computer. The same advice goes for recording audio with your Mac, always use an external microphone for good rich sounding audio.

I have used Display Rec to meet just one YouTube video so far and I can say that I am pleased with the results. It does what it is supposed to do, that is to record iPad screen video. I plan to continue using this iPad screencast recorder to make YouTube video tutorials and if I run into any major difficulties I will add an update to this post. Mac20Q gives Display Rec a thumbs up if you want to know how to record your screen of your iPad. The

Reading books on iPad – Books to download

I like reading books and I also like audio books. It is even possible to find free downloadable audio books. The good thing about audio books is that you can ‘read’ books while you are doing something else, such as walking the dog. My dog needs a quite a lot of walking, so I can do quite a lot of reading. But if for you, the idea of reading is more like sitting in a nice comfortable chair with your feet up, then I think there is nothing better than to read books on iPad. You can get an iPad book into an iPad reader and really relax and get lost in the story.

Books to download

The advantages are reading books on iPad

There are a number of advantages for reading books on iPad and that has to start with the fact that you can have a large number of books with you at all times. Especially if you are going travelling on a long trip and you need to have some reading material, then you should be making a trip to the i bookstore. You can look in the iBookstore and find books to download and there are plenty of other places where you can find good books to download.

One of the places that I like to read books is while I am having my breakfast or lunch, or in fact any meal where I’m sitting at the table. With an old-fashioned dead tree type of book, it is just about impossible to keep the book open to the page that you are reading. I need to have both hands free for wielding my knife and fork, so there is no way to keep the book on the right page. When you are reading an iPad book using one of the various iPad reader applications, all you have to do is to prop the iPad up and give it an occasional swipe when you need to turn the page. Reading books on iPad this way really works well for me.

Disadvantages of reading books on iPad

Well the only disadvantage that I can think of, is that it is almost impossible to read books on the iPad whilst sitting on the beach. Unless it is cloudy, then why are you sitting on the beach, then the bright sunlight will stop you from doing any reading. That is one good reason to also own a Kindle.

Kindle books on iPad

Although there are quite a few iPad reader applications that you can use to get your literary fix, I find that the one that I use most is the Kindle app for iPad. This is not because it is any better than the Apple iBooks application. It is mainly because I have an automated way of finding free books to download. There is a website called ‘If This Then That’ and I have found an automation recipe that gets me free books from Amazon. Usually the if this then that automation works very well and the book that it tells me about is free. Lately though, some of the suggestions have been books that needed to be paid for, although still very cheap. Right now I have enough reading material on my iPad, in the Kindle for iPad application to keep me going for some time.

Another sort of reading – Textbooks for iPad

With the advent of the superb application called iBooks Author there has been an explosion of textbooks for iPad. There were already ebook text books just the same as there were epub books, but now they are much enhanced. The Apple ebook textbooks built upon the functionality of the old standard epub, with the addition of video, audio, 3-D images and more. This sort of textbook is the way of the future and Apple own this space at the moment. In the spirit of competition, it would be very good to see another software manufacturer produce a competitor for iBooks Author.

There are cost advantages to having electronic books rather than the paper-based textbooks. This is extra important for the homeschooling community who will no longer have put up with tatty used homeschool books. Kids have never looked after the paper books very well and it would be normal to find scribbles and notes in the margins. A paper-based book like that would be quite difficult to sell on. Ebook textbooks are infinitely updatable and therefore more likely to be up-to-date with regards the content. You can take notes electronically using your iOS device either within the iPad reader, or within a separate application.

Textbooks for iPad – Useful and more interesting

It has already been shown that the students reading books on iPad are more engaged with the content. This will have obvious benefits in terms of the learning experience and many school districts have seen the wisdom of having iPads in the classroom. Personally, I have been able to use an iPad in the classroom as a teacher. Unfortunately, within the school where I was working there were no other iPads, so I couldn’t take full advantage of the technology. I would really like to be able to connect up the projector to an Apple TV and wirelessly transmit from my iPad. Working this way in the classroom would give marvellous freedom of movement and this would be beneficial to the classroom management.

Head on down to the iTunes bookstore

At the start of this article it was about the leisure activity of reading books on iPad technology. There are many different types of books though and it is not surprising that I got waylaid and moved on to talking about ebook textbooks. So whether your interest is in reading for enjoyment or reading for educational purposes, I think you should be looking at reading books on iPad. There are plenty of books to download, some are free, some are inexpensive, but all of them have advantages over the old fashioned dead tree-based books.
