How to record your screen to make iPad app tutorials

Recording audio and video on the iPad

For some time now I have been looking at finding a solution to recording the audio and video on the iPad. Finally a fairly good and inexpensive solution has appeared. The way to record your iPad video is to use an application called Display Rec. Up until now there were only more expensive possibilities that is required buying the latest iPad or also the latest video breakout hardware. Now you have an app available in the iTunes App Store that does a reasonable job of capturing video from your iPad.

A test recording of video from the iPad

How to record your screen

My first set of tests of the application Display Rec on the iPad looks very promising indeed. I have been using it with the iPad 1 and the only problem would be, if you want to record your screen, is the need for an iPad with a little more horsepower. I feel sure that to do an iPad screen recording it will work a whole lot better with a later model iPad. At least now it is possible to do some sort of iPad screencast with a cheap screencast recorder for iPad.

How to record your screen of your iPad

Record your screen

If you want to learn how to record your screen it is no longer necessary to break out a huge wad of cash. Head on down to the iTunes App Store and grab a copy of Display Rec. With this application you can make recordings of the video from your iPad, to an iPod video recording to use in screencast. The methods that were used in the past meant that you either have to jailbreak your iPad, or use software that would push the video out to another Apple computer over Wi-Fi. It may also have been possible to do an iPad screen recording by using a fairly expensive breakout box device. I know of two applications that allow you to record iPad screen video and one of them is called Reflection. When you can see the video mirror of what is happening on your iPad on your Macintosh computer, you can record it using your favourite screen capture application. The one that I prefer to users called ScreenFlow.

You can set the quality of the recorded video and also the size of the video in the settings in the Display recorder app. If you need to thou can put in a Max Duration, which might be useful if you have limited space on your device. I have also recorded from the iPhone 4 with this app.

How to record your screen using Display Rec. All you need to do is to start the application on your iPad and then open up the application you wish to record. I demonstrated this in a video about a Byword for iPad and the resulting video was very usable indeed. I was able to get the video onto my Mac via iTunes and although I could use an application like Final Cut Pro X, for quick cutting and editing are used ScreenFlow. When I had finished editing in ScreenFlow, I exported out and did the top and tail of the video in Final Cut.

Display Rec iPad screen recorder pros and cons

The advantages of using Display Rec is that it is a very cheap application to buy and the resulting video is easily good enough to make a watchable screencast. There are not many disadvantages other than you may run into problems if you want to record an application that is for recording audio. I did try to record a video using this iPad screen recorder, Display Rec, of the application that works with the iRig microphone. It seemed that it was doing the recording but when I have finished it was unable to put together anything that I could use. It did look like a video file had been created and I tried to open it in a number of video manipulation applications on the Mac. Each time I tried it seemed that I had just got a video file that was corrupted and useless. During one of my tests I wanted to record the application Tweetbot for iOS and on my iPod 1, I found that the application ran very slowly. The Tweetbot application also crashed and stopped working during this test. If I were using the third-generation iPad I may not run into this problem. I used to use Twittelator Pro before I switched to Tweetbot for iOS and there is now a Tweetbot for Mac.

How to create an iPad video recording

Ipad screen recorder

You now know how to record your screen on the iPad and it is possible to edit this in iMovie. iMovie which is made for the nonprofessional type of user, but gives very professional results. The thing to do is to connect a decent microphone to the iPad rather than use the inbuilt microphone. This will give you a much better sounding voice over track. If you don’t have a good microphone to connect to the iPad, then use the internal microphone and replace the soundtrack when editing on your Apple Mac computer. The same advice goes for recording audio with your Mac, always use an external microphone for good rich sounding audio.

I have used Display Rec to meet just one YouTube video so far and I can say that I am pleased with the results. It does what it is supposed to do, that is to record iPad screen video. I plan to continue using this iPad screencast recorder to make YouTube video tutorials and if I run into any major difficulties I will add an update to this post. Mac20Q gives Display Rec a thumbs up if you want to know how to record your screen of your iPad. The

Reading books on iPad – Books to download

I like reading books and I also like audio books. It is even possible to find free downloadable audio books. The good thing about audio books is that you can ‘read’ books while you are doing something else, such as walking the dog. My dog needs a quite a lot of walking, so I can do quite a lot of reading. But if for you, the idea of reading is more like sitting in a nice comfortable chair with your feet up, then I think there is nothing better than to read books on iPad. You can get an iPad book into an iPad reader and really relax and get lost in the story.

Books to download

The advantages are reading books on iPad

There are a number of advantages for reading books on iPad and that has to start with the fact that you can have a large number of books with you at all times. Especially if you are going travelling on a long trip and you need to have some reading material, then you should be making a trip to the i bookstore. You can look in the iBookstore and find books to download and there are plenty of other places where you can find good books to download.

One of the places that I like to read books is while I am having my breakfast or lunch, or in fact any meal where I’m sitting at the table. With an old-fashioned dead tree type of book, it is just about impossible to keep the book open to the page that you are reading. I need to have both hands free for wielding my knife and fork, so there is no way to keep the book on the right page. When you are reading an iPad book using one of the various iPad reader applications, all you have to do is to prop the iPad up and give it an occasional swipe when you need to turn the page. Reading books on iPad this way really works well for me.

Disadvantages of reading books on iPad

Well the only disadvantage that I can think of, is that it is almost impossible to read books on the iPad whilst sitting on the beach. Unless it is cloudy, then why are you sitting on the beach, then the bright sunlight will stop you from doing any reading. That is one good reason to also own a Kindle.

Reading books on ipad

Kindle books on iPad

Although there are quite a few iPad reader applications that you can use to get your literary fix, I find that the one that I use most is the Kindle app for iPad. This is not because it is any better than the Apple iBooks application. It is mainly because I have an automated way of finding free books to download. There is a website called ‘If This Then That’ and I have found an automation recipe that gets me free books from Amazon. Usually the if this then that automation works very well and the book that it tells me about is free. Lately though, some of the suggestions have been books that needed to be paid for, although still very cheap. Right now I have enough reading material on my iPad, in the Kindle for iPad application to keep me going for some time.

Another sort of reading – Textbooks for iPad

With the advent of the superb application called iBooks Author there has been an explosion of textbooks for iPad. There were already ebook text books just the same as there were epub books, but now they are much enhanced. The Apple ebook textbooks built upon the functionality of the old standard epub, with the addition of video, audio, 3-D images and more. This sort of textbook is the way of the future and Apple own this space at the moment. In the spirit of competition, it would be very good to see another software manufacturer produce a competitor for iBooks Author.

There are cost advantages to having electronic books rather than the paper-based textbooks. This is extra important for the homeschooling community who will no longer have put up with tatty used homeschool books. Kids have never looked after the paper books very well and it would be normal to find scribbles and notes in the margins. A paper-based book like that would be quite difficult to sell on. Ebook textbooks are infinitely updatable and therefore more likely to be up-to-date with regards the content. You can take notes electronically using your iOS device either within the iPad reader, or within a separate application.

Textbooks for iPad – Useful and more interesting

It has already been shown that the students reading books on iPad are more engaged with the content. This will have obvious benefits in terms of the learning experience and many school districts have seen the wisdom of having iPads in the classroom. Personally, I have been able to use an iPad in the classroom as a teacher. Unfortunately, within the school where I was working there were no other iPads, so I couldn’t take full advantage of the technology. I would really like to be able to connect up the projector to an Apple TV and wirelessly transmit from my iPad. Working this way in the classroom would give marvellous freedom of movement and this would be beneficial to the classroom management.

Head on down to the iTunes bookstore

At the start of this article it was about the leisure activity of reading books on iPad technology. There are many different types of books though and it is not surprising that I got waylaid and moved on to talking about ebook textbooks. So whether your interest is in reading for enjoyment or reading for educational purposes, I think you should be looking at reading books on iPad. There are plenty of books to download, some are free, some are inexpensive, but all of them have advantages over the old fashioned dead tree-based books.

Do I Need an Apple iPhone 4 case now?

The amazing iPhone and I am late to the party

The iPhone 4S has been available for some time now and the iPhone 5 rumours have already started. And yet I’ve only just upgraded from an iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4. Strictly speaking, I haven’t even done that. The iPhone 4 that I have just bought from Apple is not actually for me, but for my wife. She has been in need of a dose of iPhone goodness for some time now. When she bought her last phone, a crappy feature phone, I did suggest at the time that she should get an iPhone. I wasn’t listened to, nothing new there then.

Apple iPhone 4 case 1

So my plan has been to get a new iPad, so that I can do the Wizardgold YouTube videos showing how to use applications for iOS. On top of that, my iPhone 3G was getting rather long in the tooth and I could do with a new iPhone for myself. Then again, for most of the year I don’t really need an iPhone, as I don’t make many phone calls at all. I could be better off with an iPod Touch and a cheap old phone that just makes phone calls. So what happened, that made me change my plans, was that I was offered a reasonable amount of money for my iPhone 3G. So after much gnashing of teeth and cogitating, I decided that I would sell it and put the money towards a newer model of iPhone.

Which model of iPhone to buy and what about an Apple iPhone 4 case?

I did consider the iPhone 3GS, as my mother and sister have both recently got one of these. As they live in England, they were able to get one of these 3GS iPhones, without having to pay any money and just £20 a month for the contract. A very good deal, indeed. Here in Spain though, I would have to buy one of those outright and it would cost €350. The only thing against buying a 3GS would be that it is old technology now and has less value in terms of longevity, than getting one with the number four in its name. The present version of the iPhone 4S that was out of my price range, would cost to much to buy at €600. At only €100 more than the iPhone 4, the extra amount would be worth it in terms of the better processor, better camera and for Siri, but as I say not in my price range.

So the model to get was the iPhone 4, even though there is only one size available at 8 GB. When setting the new iPhone up, I found I had to do a certain amount of pruning after being used to a phone with 16 GB of space. Not a huge problem really, as I was able to take off most of the music, to leave plenty of space for the applications and enough for some iPhone photography. So after selling the old iPhone, I gathered up some available cash to place an order with Apple for the iPhone 4. The order was placed early Monday afternoon and I was amazed that the delivery date was going to be the following day.

A new iPhone 4 winding its way from Italy to Catalonia

The iPhone had to come from Italy and it was fun to watch it on the UPS tracking website, move from the original warehouse to the UPS hub, onto Cologne in Germany, before heading to Barcelona. Quite amusing really that it took the long route to get here and was still able to do it in just over 24 hours. We were quite exciting to get the delivery and proceed to the un-boxing stage. It was only after getting the phone out that I remembered that I would need a smaller SIM card in order to activate the iPhone. It was going to be impossible to wait long enough to get a mini SIM card from the mobile phone company. So I decided to do a Google search for instructions to cut one down manually. In the end it turned out to be very easy to do and I soon had the SIM card in the slot and the activation in progress.

The plans for the use of the new iPhone

On account of the fact that I don’t make many phone calls and that my wife uses her phone quite a lot, I decided that it would be better for her to have the iPhone 4. For the moment though, I am working at a campsite and presently I am able to make better use of the phone than she is. So the plan is for me to use this new phone until August 20th when the job finishes and to pass the phone on. My priority is for the new iPad third-generation, so that I can dive into making the you Tube videos showing how to use iPad applications. I plan to use the application Reflections on my Mac and stream the video from the iPad to the iMac and record it using ScreenFlow. I was a little surprised to find that it isn’t possible to do the same thing using Airplay or Reflections with this new iPhone 4. Another reason why the iPhone 4S would have better value for me.

iPhone 5 release date – Apple Rumours Bloody Rumours

There is a possibility that Apple will release the iPhone 5 in the autumn of this year. That could be sometime around October or November, so what I might do is to start a fund for a new iPhone for myself. I wonder if the Apple iPhone 4 case will fit the iPhone 5? I will be able to possibly take advantage of lower prices on an iPhone 4S after the iPhone 5 has been released. Youtube videos about iPhone apps and Siri for some fun too. There were some comments made about the iPhone 4S Battery and iOS 5

Apple iphone 4s

Taking note of the differences between the old iPhone 3G and the iPhone 4

Setting up the new iPhone 4 was pretty easy after I cut down the Sim card and was able to activate the phone. I restored the phone from a backup, during the setup process. That made it easy to have all of my data on the new phone. No worries about doing a factory reset in August and setting up the iPhone one more time. I get the feeling that the iPhone 4 is better built and of higher quality than my old iPhone. The screen looks great with it being a Retina Display, so I will be looking forward to seeing the Retina Display on the third-generation iPad when I get it.

Shiny and new on the outside with the iPhone 4 – Better operating system on the inside

With the iPhone 3G, I have been stuck with the iOS 4.2.1 for quite some time now. Even though I have iOS version 5 on the amazing iPad, it is still rather nice to see up-to-date software on an iPhone. I am enjoying the much better quality cameras and the ability to use PhotoStream. I have also been looking forward to being able to use the new features in iPhoto for iOS, in particular the Journal feature. Really, I think it is about time that the Journal tool was included in iPhoto for the Mac. Definitely I should spend some time finding out, what else I can do with the taking of photos and movie clips with the iPhone 4. I will also be able to install iOS 6 on this phone.

It is certainly very nice to have a much faster processor and to benefit from a little bit of speed. I like that there is the Compass application on the iPhone. Didn’t have that on the previous phone. Another application that could be useful to get, now that I have a iOS device that will do magical video, could be iMovie for iOS. Another thing that this iPhone will be useful for, is the scanning of QR codes. Sometimes you find these codes in tourist information places. All you have to do is to take a quick picture to gather up extra information, about whatever it is you are looking at. My wife is going to particularly love that feature and make great use of it. All in all, an excellent purchase and I would expect this iPhone to last 2 to 3 years and still be highly useful, even then. There are plenty of Apple iPhone 4 cases to choose from and they also fit the Apple iPhone 4s

Dragon Dictate mac speech recognition software

Today after checking some iPhone 4S news I thought I would try out the Dragon Dictation iOS application for iOS. It works well but doesn’t really give iPhone 4 voice control, aside from letting me post my words to Twitter and Facebook. Do you know of any apps that supply voice control iPhone 4? Maybe I should hold out for the iPhone 4S for myself. I will have to save up the cash, that’s all.

iPad Apps for teachers – Teaching with iPad

The iPad revolution in teaching

I have become very interested in how iPads’ can be used in hands of educators. This is because of a brief return to teaching for me during April and May this year. While I was working as a teacher in a Catalan school, working as a language teacher, I made great use of my iPad. I used the iPad in the classroom as a place to keep all of my notes, of course I used Evernote for that. I used the iPad in the classroom to show video and also to play audio to the students. I also used Bento, the database application for taking the register of attendance. Truly one of the best iPad apps for teachers, and there is a plethora of apps for teachers.

Ipad apps for teachers

I would have loved it if I could have included and made use of the iPad even more, within my classes. Certainly it would have been absolutely brilliant if the students in the class had iPads to use also. As you might expect in Spain, even though I’m working in the relatively well-off area of Catalonia, the cost of Apple gear seemed prohibitive to the students and also to the teachers within the school. There was a good deal of interest in my iPad in the staff room as well as in the classroom. There were gasps of, “Hey that is cool!“ When teachers saw me using my Apple Bluetooth keyboard for inputting text into the iPad. The kids were delighted when I let them speak into the Talking Tomcat application, so that they can hear themselves speaking English with a funny voice. Great to see the Catalan children suddenly becoming less shy about speaking English, so the Talking Tomcat was a complete success.

A one to one Apple iPad program seems impossible, but what about BYOD or BYOT?

This is where the creative teacher and also the students alike, work on the basis of bring your own device or tool. Where the money is not forthcoming from the school administration departments, then there maybe possibilities of allowing students to bring in their own devices. In the school where I was teaching, the students had cheap Windows laptops which can be used by them in the classroom. Unfortunately I didn’t get the opportunity to see how they were being used, I would certainly have been interested to find out more.

There are certain applications that can be used as collaboration tools within a classroom. There are also Web services, like Socrative and VoiceThread, that can provide a way for students to work together to produce content for their own class. Teachers that are diving into this type of use of technology within the classroom are saying that iPads and teacher software are having a revolutionary effect on teaching.

To a large extent, teaching using technology is still in a transition phase. In the UK, for instance there has already been a huge initiative to install the large interactive whiteboards in most if not all classrooms. There are some lucky schools both in the UK and also in the USA, that are going down the route of the one-to-one iPad per child. In many cases, students are allowed to take their iPad home with them. Often in these instances there will be a free iPad for teachers, well it is needed for teaching with iPad.

iPad Apps for teachers and digital textbooks too!

The iPad is there to be used for digital textbooks. There are a number of good reasons to move towards digital textbooks, such as the content being more up-to-date and a large number of books being able to be carried in one small device. No longer will children have to carry large rucksacks full of books from one classroom to another. The iPad does everything that the student is likely to need within the classroom using a variety of iPad educational applications. There are iPad apps which are specific to the subjects being studied, as well as iPad applications which can be used for creation of content as required by the whole learning process.

Teaching with iPad

Digital content management – Creating a student digital portfolio

As part of the daily grind of student life, pupils have to produce work that can be there to either gather as a repository of their learning, or use for revision of learning in preparation for exams. So what is needed, is a student digital portfolio which will have all of the content created, during their time in school and also from home work completed. However the teaching is conducted during the school periods, it seems there will always be the need for homework. Having such a digital portfolio has certain advantages and benefits, for example the multimedia nature of learning by using good technology, should make the whole thing more engaging. Teachers should be encouraging the use of video and audio alongside text and pictures, to bring the subject matter to life. Get more of the senses working. I have seen some teachers turn to iTunes for keeping a digital portfolio. Not really made for the job and a database like Bento could be employed.

iPads as a tool for education

Jumping headfirst into teaching using technology with tools such as the iPad, could certainly be rather daunting for many teachers. Such an approach would require a completely new way of thinking. Instead of teachers being the font of all knowledge, standing in front of the class pushing out the information, teachers may need to work more as facilitators. It may even be the case that teachers will allow themselves to get into a situation that would lead them also to learn things from students. That is not a bad thing, it shows students that we are all lifelong learners as well as boosting the self-confidence of pupils. If such a process is handled correctly, there’s no reason why it should have an impact upon the classroom management.

The iPad is good for classroom management

While I was teaching in the classroom in the Catalan school, I ran into the age-old problem of a couple of kids thinking that they could mess around while I was writing on the whiteboard. I was able to get around this to a certain extent by moving myself to the back of the class and getting students to write on the board for me. One of the great things with the iPad is that it can be used in such a way that you can write on your iPad, having it mirrored onto the board at the front of the class. This can be onto one of those interactive whiteboard beasts, it could be through a projector onto a screen, or it could even be onto a television screen.

There has been a report by a teacher in charge of a school where instead of using the interactive whiteboards, he was able to set up a alternative system within the classroom. This system was based around the iPad used by the teacher and then mirrored to a large television via the Apple TV device. Teachers using this system found it preferable, as they were able to unchain themselves from the front of the classroom. They were able to stand behind or near to the typical back of the classroom type of kids, to ensure their participation in the lesson. Teachers were able to do this at the same time as getting the information in front of all of the students in an effective way. There are lists of best apps for teachers and teaching with iPad in the class can be fun too.

Another use for this type of system could be where a teacher wants to show a student work to the rest of the class. For instance a student might have completed a particularly difficult mathematics calculation. This work could be photographed using the iPad and immediately displayed on the display device at the front of the class. Even easier if the work is digital, if the class have their own electronic devices to work from, that work could be shared either directly to the screen or shared to the teachers device and then displayed. There are one or two iPad applications that allow the teacher to pass the connection from his or her device to the screen, so that, the students work will be shown instead. Content for interested students could be made available online and at the end of the class there could be content that is shared out to the whole of the class.

Advantages of iPads in education

  • Students are more motivated when using technology like this.
  • There is a feeling by students and staff alike that they are working more effectively.
  • It seems that there are more chances for collaborative working when using iPads.
  • Teachers producing classroom content using iBooks author can tailor the work to the class.
  • There are cost savings compared to traditional textbooks.
  • It has been found that the standard and quality of work by the students is higher when using good technology.

Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater

While I love technology and the use of it to improve teaching and learning, I wouldn’t like to see tried and tested successful practices being lost and forgotten. The technology doesn’t have to be used for the sake of it and there will still be a place for the pencil or pen on paper. It would also be terrible for a teacher to use the iPad or any other technology, just because they felt they had to. Especially so, if the teacher was not prepared to make other changes in order to be able to properly integrate the iPad into their teaching. I have come across teachers that have a dislike of technology and a mistrust of change. Change is going to happen, whether we like it or not and we just have to embrace it.

Obviously for some parts of the teaching faculty, there will be a need for training in order to get the best from iPads in the classroom. Without a doubt, education has to develop for the 21st-century and it is an exciting period of flux and change. In a few years time, schoolchildren will think that the use of technology such as iPhones, iPods and iPads as well as devices from other operating systems such as Android, as being totally normal. There is going to be a mix of schools that go with a 1 to 1 iPad per child and some that will go down the route of Bring Your Own Device. The BYOD is going to be harder to manage for the teachers in the classroom and may require a more creative way of working and of expectation to get to the required objectives of a classroom session. I could see that collaboration between students in groups that have a mix of devices.

iPads for schools along with iPad apps for schools for creative teachers is the way forward into the future. There are wikis and Twitter conversations going on to spread the knowledge about iPad school apps and school books on iPad.

  • What are your favourite iPad apps for teachers?
  • Do you plan to take up teaching with iPad technology?
  • Have you done any iPad teaching? How did it go for you?
  • Can you recommend the iPad for school work?
  • Do you have experience of best apps for teachers?

Put a comment on this web page, I would love to hear what you have to say about this, if you are a teacher. In fact if you are a student in a school, what do you think about all of this?
