How to add movies to iTunes

how to add movies to iTunes

Easy to add movies to iTunes

iTunes will accept a number of different video codecs and there are also quite a few that it will not take. The video codecs that are not accepted tend to be from the Windows universe such as the .avi and the .wmv file types The easiest way to add a movie to iTunes is to do the drag-and-drop from your finder. Just have iTunes in one half of your desktop available to drop into and in the other half have your Finder. In iTunes if you have the movies tab open you can drop the file directly into your collection of movies. If you don’t have your movies section open in your library then you can drop the file into the area in the left hand column into the list underneath the word Library. Just the same as if you were bringing in some music and the music gets put into your music collection, the movie file is put into the correct place with the rest of your movies. It is as simple as that with your files that are .mov or .m4v type of files, but what do you do with one of those weird Windows movie codecs. Don’t worry, you will find a free way to convert video to iPad or iPod, you will be able to add movies to iTunes easily.

How to add movies to iTunes that are .AVI

What you have to do is to convert those movies to a format that is acceptable for iTunes. Basically this will mean that the file will have to be converted to H.264 and if you want to have your movie also put onto your iPod, then you may need to make sure it is of a certain pixel size and also may need to take care of the audio. There are a large number of applications or programs available for use on all platforms, be that Windows, Linux or Mac and the level of complexity for use of these applications varies considerably to use with your iTunes videos. Is there a need for iPad 2 Flash support – HTML 5 Aside

Hype html5 Aside

HTML5 Aside Magazine

One of the things that you frequently get from the naysayers or the Apple haters, is that the iPad will not play flash. I have been using the iPad for over a year now and have never needed flash to be able to do what I need to do using the device. Adobe have recently stated that they will no longer support or go forward with their mobile flash product. Although they are late to the party, it seems that they finally agreed that Flash is too processor intensive and greedy to properly run well on mobile devices. There have been one or two applications which have tried to get flash to run in some strange hacked sort of fashion, but I don’t think they have been too successful. The sort of iPad Flash app are few and far between and I don’t think they are really worth bothering with. So, do you really need iPad 2 Flash support?

HTML 5 is the future although Flash will persist

There will be many websites that will continue to have Flash on them. This will be because of inertia by some web designers to move from something that they know already and also there will be websites that just don’t get upgraded to HTML 5. On the other hand, HTML 5 is the standard that has been agreed and forward-looking web designers will prefer to use a standard that will give a better user experience to the website readers. Many websites are already changing to HTML 5 and there are a number of excellent examples of HTML 5 media such as the HTML 5 Aside magazine. The Aside magazine created by a German group of designers showed what can be done creatively with HTML 5.

HTML5 Aside Magazine Creativity

Aside The Stunning HTML5 Magazine for iPad |

Within the magazine you have audio, video, animation and even 3-D animation design elements. You get a certain amount of user interactivity, for instance if you touch one of a group of photos, it will animate to zoom up to the front of the pile. There are buttons that you can touch that cause a photo and text to change, also using animation to move from one state to another. Aside HTML 5 magazine is really impressive looking and an enjoyable experience for the reader. The only thing I would say is, is that if you don’t know that there are animations they’re available, you might not click or tap on the part of the design that make things happen.

As you would expect with any webpage you will find that there are hotlinks that will take you from one page to another as well as on page buttons that will cause things to happen on that page. You might clicl on a button for instance, and the image on the page will change along with the text to go with it. When viewing the magazine on the iPad, you can do the usual swipe gesture to move from one page to the next.

MotionComposer review

Creating your own HTML 5 webpages

Already there are plenty of places online where you can find information about how to use HTML 5 and there are also applications available such as the application called Hype. I have also recently tried an application called Motion Composer, which is also a Mac app. Hype is an application which is totally HTML 5 and is a WYSIWYG way of creating HTML 5 animations for a webpage. You can use the Hype application like a desktop publishing app or Pages for iPad, but with a timeline, to manipulate the elements that you wish to include in your webpage. Using the page that you create for yourself on a web site is really easy. You just put two lines of code on your webpage and upload a folder that the code refers to.

Using HTML 5 to predict the of the world

There is a book that you can buy from the iTunes iOS application store which is by Al Gore which also extensively uses HTML 5. It has some superb animations and interactivity built into it and is certainly even more impressive than the Aside HTML 5 magazine. The company that produced the software that was used to create the Al Gore book, was called Push Pop Press. It would have been great if that software had been made available to all web designers to buy, but it is now unlikely that will happen as the company was bought by another larger company, possibly Facebook. We will have to wait to see if Push Pop Press is developed further and is made available to use to create more content like the Al Gore ‘Our Choice’ digital book.

Can we expect to see more like the HTML 5 Aside magazine?

The Aside magazine was constructed with the iPad specifically in mind. It was set to the iPad screen dimensions of 1024 x 768 pixels and worked as a webpage within the application. It might have worked a little better in terms of speed of download, if all of the content had been downloaded with the application. We are seeing this approach happening more often, such as with the SCO tutor for Lion by Don McAllister in which the videos are downloaded to the iPad. The same happens also with the new application by Sting the musician and 450 MB of content downloads as part of the application.

Print magazines are looking to use this technology to be able to disseminate their content and have it better looking and more interactive at the same time. It also gets around the need to have the application sold through the Apple ecosystem, when the magazine is presented like the Aside HTML 5 magazine has been.

HTML5 Aside Magazine

You don’t need flash for iPad or flash for iPad 2 to get the best out of an iPad html5 magazine. Steve Jobs was right about flash support for iPad 2 and the original iPad, the html5 Aside Magazine proves that iPad flash support would have been a big mistake.

Reading on the iPad using iBooks for Mac

App Store iBooks for Mac

iBooks and Kindle app for reading on the iPad

iBooks for Mac doesn’t actually exist what you need is the iBooks for iPad, so that you can read your electronic books. It is time to give up on turning pages on the dead tree versions of books and go in to the world of electronic books. There are plenty of books that you can buy from the iTunes store in the books section, but to get you started as there are also plenty of free iBooks. You can even download books from Google books for free. Google have a huge project on, where they are digitising a very large number of books and there are quite a few other sites to where you can get free iBooks. If you still really need to have iBooks for Mac then there are applications that you can get that will allow you to read the books on your desktop or laptop computer. There is Stanza, there is a Sony digital reader, Adobe Editions, also there is one more that I’ve tried for reading e-book’s on my Mac, it is open source and so ugly that I’m not even going to mention the name of it here.

Free iBooks for iPad

If you want to get into reading iBooks on the iPad and you don’t want to spend any money, then there are number of places you might look to get your free iBooks for your iPad. One such place is called Manybooks.net and it is very easy to download what they call, the best books at the best price, as in they are free. You may search through the site by browsing through the titles which are most popular. There are recent reviews that you can use to help you decide which books you want to download and read. These reviews are made by other visitors to the site to help you decide on books for Reading on the iPad
.

Collections of free iBooks

On the ManyBooks website you will find some user generated bookshelves, books to read before you die, science fiction after 1950 and you can even find stories about fairies. If you look in the section for the 1950 science-fiction it does seem to be just some books from 1950 through to 1956. Obviously there seems to be more work to do on this particular list and you needn’t expect to find the latest bestsellers in there either. This doesn’t mean that the books aren’t any good. For example Philip K Dick is one of the authors in the list with a book called ‘Piper in the Woods’ and he is the author that is famous for the book that became the Blade Runner movie with Harrison Ford.

ManyBooks net free ibooks

One of the best lists on the ManyBooks website is the list of the books that became movies. In this list you will find fantastic stories, drama, horror, westerns and adventure stories. So if you like reading books and you want to read them on your iPad using iBooks for iPad, then you will surely find plenty of free iBooks there. This site claims to have more than 29,000 books to choose from, that you will be able to read on the Kindle
, the Sony e-reader, the Nook and also the iPad.

iBooks download for iOS

The iBooks application which includes the iBook store will also let you download the latest bestsellers as well as the top classics. The view you have is of a wooden bookshelf and it is easy to tap on a book to open it. Then you are easily able to flip or swipe, to move from one page to the next to have a very nice reading experience. If you add a bookmark while reading a book on your iPhone when you go to the iPad copy of the book, to read some more, you’ll find that the book mark is there also. If you are a student, then you will like the ability to add notes to sections of text.

free ibooks

It is very handy indeed that the iBook store allows you to get a free sample of any book, to help you decide if you want to spend the money on buying the book. That seems to work in just the same way as in the music store where you are able to listen to 30 seconds of a song. As well as being able to read the ePub format books you may also have PDF documents in your personal collections. If you download books from Google books you can add them to your collection and read them on your iPad.

Reading your free books for iPad in bed

I have read a few books using iBooks on the iPad, I like the fact that we get an animation when we are moving from page to page. It is extremely useful being able to adjust the brightness of the page and you can even change the styling so that it is easier to read. One other really good thing about reading on the iPad is when you are in a low light situation – which could be on an aeroplane when the lights go out or it could be in the bedroom and your partner is asleep and you want to continue reading, you can continue reading even when the Kindle e-Ink becomes useless. There are number of fonts to choose from and you can give the page a sepia colour which also makes it easier on the eyes for reading.

Reading on the iPad

Below is a list of some sites were you can go to get your free books. If you are content creator yourself then you may also want to produce your own e-book’s. You will be delighted to hear that there are applications available that will let you do just that. Scrivener on the Mac will allow you to output to the e-book format, it is a shame there is no Scrivener for iPad. You can also create your books on your iPad, the apps are quite simple in terms of the facilities that they offer, but you will get properly formatted the books from applications such as Book Creator, EBook Magic or Demi Books Composer.

iBooks for Mac

Reading novels has to be one of my favourite uses of my iPad. Sometimes I might be reading pdf on iPad but that is more for when I am learning something, or it is for business. It is really good when you are reading a book and you can just open the app and continue reading from where you left off. With some apps you will find that the position you are at in the book will synchronise across devices. So you might be reading ebooks on ipad and then change to the iPhone and pick up right where you left off. When you are reading pdfs on ipad as opposed to reading novels it is just as comfortable as an experience. I like ibook for iPad but mostly I use Kindle
for iPad. The Kindle app is a great way to get at your reading material. It is pretty easy to get the reading material into the right format too.

Apple complete reading experience needs an iBooks for Mac

The iPad for reading ebooks is one way to go, but I think we also need iBooks for Mac. To have iBooks Mac it would cover all bases as far as the Apple reading experience is concerned.

Samsung Galaxy S II versus the iPhone 4S

Samsung i9100 Galaxy S II

The Samsung Galaxy S 2 Review

On the face of it the Samsung Galaxy S II looks to be a pretty good phone with some great specifications of the hardware. So how does the iPhone compare against the Galaxy SII and the first thing to note, is that it is cheaper. Without doing a full set of research on this it looks like the Samsung is about 100 euro cheaper as a SIM free phone than the iPhone. The question is though, what is it like in terms of really getting down to it and using the phone.

Technical details of the Samsung Galaxy SII

The important statistic is that it has a 4.3 inch display screen and a dual core processor. With the bigger screen it also comes with greater graphic performance and fast processing of the data. The camera is an eight megapixel autofocus camera which is on par with the iPhone 4S. The galaxy phones that are being sold at the present come with the Android Gingerbread operating system and one would think that sometime very soon they will be supplied with Ice Cream Sandwich. It has 1 GB of RAM with 16 GB installed and you can also put in a Micro SD card, up to 32 GB.

What do Samsung Galaxy S2 users think of the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S2 review

Looking through the customer reviews on Amazon for this phone, out of 187 reviews it has been given 144 five-star reviews and 23 four-star reviews. I would say that this is pretty conclusive that the owners of the Galaxy are very happy with their smart phone. I’m not sure that this phone would be good for me though because I tend to use my iPhone a lot for playing music. It has been reported that if you use it to play music is uses a lot of the processor power to do that and as well as getting hot in your pocket, it kills battery very quickly. To counter against that you would have to wonder how that would compare with the reported battery problems with the iPhone 4S using iOS 5. The usage for the music and the iPhone should be better with it having its background history based on the iPod.

Another thing to take note of, with regards the battery usage is that if you have the widgets on the home screen of the phone, it can have a detrimental effect on the life of the battery. As with many things, is down to give and take and the balance of the technology you want to use and how much battery life it takes to use it.

Users have reported that the Android operating system is now surprisingly useful and intuitive and will do just about all you need it to do, as soon as you take it out of the box. Samsung have put their own layer over the top of Android which they call Touch Wiz. It seems that it makes it quite a lot like iOS but perhaps a little bit more customisable.

Swapping Ecosystem

For an iPhone user that is thinking about making the change to Android, the biggest difficulty to this will be having to move from one app ecosystem to another. There you are with your iPhone with all of the apps that you have purchased over however many years you have been using the iPhone. Do you really want to change to Android and the Samsung Galaxy S 2
and have to buy apps that you have already purchased for the iPhone. For someone coming new to using a smart phone then this difficulty is not going to arise. Certainly though, it really is worth considering how much money you have spent on applications, whether you are moving from the iPhone to Android or going the other direction from Android to the iOS ecosystem.

People that have made the move from iOS to Android have really enjoyed having widgets on the home screen, finding them very useful indeed. Also popular is the fact that you can make shortcuts to contacts on your home screen for someone that you might want to instantly call, send an SMS text message to, or an e-mail. One thing that switchers have said about the Android is that it is not as easy to use, but that comes out that way because Android is much more configurable.

Samsung Galaxy i9100 S II

Overview of the Samsung Galaxy S2 mobile phone

Technically the phone is better than the iPhone 4S and even works well for making telephone calls. No problems with the antenna or with dropped calls. The screen is actually quite wonderful, is bigger than the iPhone and the fact that this phone is quite a bit cheaper than the iPhone 4S might be very tempting for users. If technically you are a bit technophobic and would prefer the easier route to using a smart phone, then the iPhone is probably for you. For anybody else considering a smart phone then the Samsung Galaxy S 2
smart phone could be a very good choice. You might also have a look at the Galaxy Nexus which is just being released and has the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich already installed on it. So why not go and buy Samsung Galaxy S II , looks like a great smart phone.

What is Bento? – Bento iPad and Bento template

Bento for iPad is a sister database application for the iOS world of Bento Mac. The Bento app comes from FileMaker which is owned by Apple. So you can expect to have a good quality application that looks good and works well. The Bento app is inexpensive, available either for the iPad or for the Mac and what I like about it is that you can put it to work for a number of different purposes. Instead of buying a specialist database app for this purpose and then another specialist database for another purpose, you could just buy Bento and it will do all you need. it is one of the best iPad apps for business.

What can you do with Bento?

what is Bento iPad

Bento will link up to your contact database on your iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch and you can also use it to keep a track of your projects. A suggestion that Bento makes, is that you can use Bento to plan events. There is an unending list of possible uses for Bento databases within a business. You can use it as a way to list products you have for sale and items sold. It will also be good to use as your customer database.

If you run any sort of club then you might want to have a membership list. As a teacher you might use it to be the database for your student lists, or for keeping track of your classes. For your own personal use you might use it to record maintenance on your vehicle, have it as you exercise log, if you are into keeping fit. You could also use it for tracking expenses or for keeping an inventory of items in your home. You will find a load ready-made templates to help you get started with this.

Bento templates

To make it easy for you to get started with Bento there are a number of templates that are already included when you buy the application. You get 25 predesigned templates that you can use in various situations, such as databases for the home, business, or within your community and also databases that you might use in a school situation. There is even a template for To Do Items. From the FileMaker Bento web pages you can also browse real-world templates, many of which have been uploaded by other Bento users. This is the Bento Template Exchange and the categories cover such areas as finance, health and fitness, music and movies, sports and time management. These templates are available in a number of languages and in the template search on the site at the moment I can see that there is 1078 template available in all languages and that 530 of those are available in English. what is Bento and what can you do with it.

If you are a student you might grab the Student Survival Kit template which is a Bento 3 template. Within that kit you will find five ready to use templates that will have you totally organised for your lecture notes, special events, classes and even for group projects. There is no charge for these templates you may download them at will.

When you are doing your Bento template search you can specify if you want to look at just the templates that are optimised for the latest Bento which is Bento 4. There are 110 templates that you can choose from and of those you might choose to have the Bento label kit – UK edition. If you have a need to print mailing labels, name badges or price stickers or even labels for folders then this could be the right template for you. You can even print labels with barcodes or price tags for products that you sell.

Syncing templates to your iPhone or Bento for iPad

There is a new Bento 4 feature which allows you to include voice memos. This is a super way to go and to audibly have important reminders within Bento 4. You can sync a template from Bento on your Mac to Bento iPad. I have just downloaded this template and it downloaded very quickly as a zip file. I unzipped the file, I had to make a note of the filename when it came in, because it just had a number for the filename and nothing to identify it, otherwise. I double clicked on the template and it opened up Bento for me on my Mac and went straight into the voice memos template. At first sight it looks like I have to record the audio in another application and save the file and then I can drop the media into the voice memo drop zone in the Bento form.

Bento Templates

Your database in Bento is called a Library and you access your libraries by tapping on the Libraries button in the top left corner. If you look down your list you will see to the right an icon which gives you access to your collections. A collection is a subset of the database library. To create a new library tap on the plus button and then you can choose from your templates. You can scroll through your templates in the album cover style viewer and then tap on the button Create Library. You have a good range of templates on the iPad to choose from, including recipes, event planning and issue tracking.

Bento for iPad

I like the way that Bento hooks into your address book on the iPad and also links into your iCal. You can add a record to the database in the address book library and it will also appear in your address book application on your iPad. The data goes in both directions.

So you may create a new database library within Bento iPad and of course you can create most of the fields required for a new database on your iPad. You get 17 of the 23 field types available in Bento on the iPad. You don’t get the simple list, file list, or message list field types or the encrypted file field type, that you get on the Mac version of Bento.

Alternatives to Bento for iPad

You could of course, just buy specialised database applications to suit specific purposes such as a shopping list database, a CD or DVD database or an art database. There are also other non specific database applications some of which are full database apps and some of which are just clients for databases that are set up on desktop computers. There is one app could HandDbase, another called Cellica database, there is Dbase for iPad and Tap Forms HD Database for iPad. I tried one called AirForms on the iPad and to make it work you set up your database in a web browser on your laptop or desktop computer. You can get a trial version of Bento from the Bento Shop online and I think if you give it a try, you might like it. I would have Bento in my top ten iPod Apps list.

Databases ipad

What is Bento and what can you do with Bento templates?

There are address book templates that you can use with Bento 2 or which ever version you are using, or you can use Bento without templates. Bento will work great on iPad and iPad 2. I use it to keep a record of attendance with my English classes. As well as the templates you also have the iPad bento mailing labels that can be handy if you have to print labels out. Run Bento on iPad and iPod if you need to have a small screen version of the Apple database. Now you know what is Bento and what you could do with it..
